K

In kindergarten we explore sounds with our voices including simple rhythms through word play, songs and musical games. We discover music through movement, small percussion instruments  and simple sung  pitch sets. We sing in unison, echo phrases  and call and response. We compose lyrics and create dance moves.

Chabot Elementary: A Community of Music Makers

At Chabot, we sing, dance, play, compose, arrange and perform.  Creativity, self expression, socio-emotional learning and community building are the heartbeat of our music program. These are the means by which we scaffolded instrumental skills, understand musical concepts, and explore music from throughout time and from around the world.

ABOUT
2nd

In 2nd grade we build upon our K-1 experience, composing and improvising in C pentatonic (5 note) scale.  We compose 4 beat phrases on xylophones, arranging different song versions by class. We learn basic hand drumming techniques, call and response rhythms and layered percussion patterns.  We sing both in unison and in 2 part rounds. We compose lyrics and cnd create dances to accompany our musical compositions.

ABOUT
3rd

In 3rd grade, we move from C  to G pentatonic on xylophones to accompany the recorder. We explore major and minor pentatonic  scales.   Students learn proper recorder playing technique, compose melodies and improvise on both recorder and xylophones. We layer 8 beat melodies and rhythms, arranging different versions of music by class.  We sing in unison,  3 part rounds. and simple part songs. We compose lyrics and create dances to accompany our musical compositions.

ABOUT
5th

In 5ht grade, students can choose to participate in band (trumpet or clarinet), strings (violin or cello) or hip hop dance and beatmaking. Instrumental students learn how to read music and proper playing techniques for their instruments.  5th grade band students vote on a song to perform each year. String students can particpate in a disrtrict string festival.  Dancers compose dances and original beats.

1st

We build upon kinder skills in 1st grade, adding pitched percussion (xylophones) to expand our pitch set, compose two note melodies and to add simple accompaniment to singing. Students learn proper mallet and playing technique on xylophones. We compose 4 beat rhythm patterns on a variety of percussion instruments.   We sing in unison, echo and call and response.  We compose lyrics and create simple dances. 

ABOUT
4th

In 4th grade we add the ukulele to our instrumental skill set.   Students play in C major (diatonic scale) on both ukulele and xylophone and perform music with  changing chord patterns. Ukulele players learn various strumming and picking techniques. We sing in unison,  3 part rounds. and simple part songs.
